AB OBJECTIVE: To be able to talk about AIDS one should be able to talk sex.
In the present socio cultural context in India sex is taboo and not
talked about at all. The present taboo and stigma is believed to be
'Indian Culture'. To overcome this the need to highlight the 'true
Indian Culture' where in sex was not taboo and indeed was cultivated.
METHODS: It was in India that sex was cultivated into a fine art and
science. It was here that 'Kamasutra' was written. This was highlighted
in a temple like structure constructed on the Marina Beach which
contained panels from Kajuraho and Kamasutra which highlighted the true
Indian Sexual Culture. In the evenings awareness programs were organized
using traditional Indian folk art forms to convey messages on sex, AIDS
and the need to talk sex for AIDS prevention. OUTCOME: Generated public
debate on Indian Sexuality. Reached over 100,000 people over four days
(Nov 27 to Dec. 1) with messages on sex, HIV/AIDS. Gave an insight into
true Indian Sexual Culture. Sensitized and trained 200 medical and 400
para medical personnel of the Public Health dept. on HIV/AIDS.
