AB OBJECTIVE: The global concern on prevention of HIV infection was adopted
at National and Institutional levels in Zambia. The University Teaching
Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia prime-moved this concern. In 1986, it formed
its Infection Control Committee. Its main objective is to prevent
Nosocomial infections especially the HIV infection which has claimed
many lives in Zambia including lives of Health Workers. METHODS:
Therefore, the Hospital developed educational strategies for its
employees. Different staff categories are taught with different
objectives. This was extended to two other major Hospitals in the
country. RESULTS: The Hospital now has trained personnel who engineer
preventive measures at departmental levels. As a result, our nursing
practice is changing. But we need money for adequate and regular
material provision which will motivate Health Care Workers in observing
the Universal HIV infection control measures. CONCLUSION: Educating
personnel, changing practice and providing material resources for Health
Workers, ensure the success of HIV prevention processes in developing
       countries.
