AB OBJECTIVE: To educate semi-skilled and unskilled workers in the
unorganised sector of tiny scale sago producing units in Salem District,
Tamilnadu and produce appropriate education materials for this largely
illiterate population. STRATEGY: This being a pilot study, after social
workers were motivated and trained, a multi-pronged strategy was used
consisting of (a) Direct interpersonal discussions with workers and
owners of the sago-producing units (b) Posters and pictorial leaflets
developed and distributed (c) Condom usage was demonstrated before male
workers in individual sago units (d) A cycle rally and health camp were
organised in one village where general health and STD messages and check
ups conducted, free medicines and condoms distributed. FINDINGS:
Questionairs administered at the start of the project revealed 90% of
the population had no awareness of STDs/HIV/AIDS and condomes. However,
upon the projects completion awareness had been created in 80% of the
population. 60% of these wanted further information on condoms and STDs.
DISCUSSION AND RESULTS: With the creation of awareness most peple living
in towns and villages of Salem District felt the use of major film stars
in HIV/AIDS prevention would be most effective. The need for adequate
STD treatment and testing facilities werre expressed. Good quality
condoms should be made available even in the semi-rural areas.
