AB OBJECTIVE: To study the extent of Aids as experienced in the Kisumu
shanty town areas. How many people have died or are dying of Aids in the
families and what can we do? METHODS: AIDS/HIV clinic cares for AIDS
people and those infected by sexual Transmitted Diseases. It
cares/supports 3000 families including orphans and youth. Following a
questionnaire, a number of questions were discussed with the families.
RESULTS: Youth of 18-28 years and middle aged people of 30-40 years have
died in greater number and many are still sick. Children below 5 yrs
have died. There are orphans in most families. DISCUSSIONS AND
CONCLUSIONS: The community showed concern in caring for the infected and
affected people. There is need for more AIDS awareness and seminars on
educational activities on behaviour change and safe sex for the
youth/people at risk. Home care/support for the HIV/AIDS affected and
infected people is necessary and mutual support to be given to the
       families too.
