AB To heighten awareness among HIV organizations of under-utilization of
seropositive persons of color in planning and implementing HIV services.
Having formed a new organization With These Hands, We Can..., we are
working with HIV providers to develop appropriate feedback/input
information strategies. Surveys of 85% of area HIV/AIDS service agencies
indicate the role of seropositive persons of color has been limited
primarily to telling their stories, thus inadvertently contributing to
services which are often deficient in meeting their needs. Their input
has not been solicited for assessment of services delivered, evaluation
of monies distributed to HIV organizations, nor planning HIV prevention
programs. By increasing participation of the targeted population, needs
of seropositive people of color will be more accurately reflected in
services made available. With appropriate ongoing needs assessing and
feedback information, as well as agency policy changes, HIV services can
improve in overall effectiveness. Most importantly, new heights of focus
in HIV services will more effectively reach the pre-HIV population of
color. With These Hands, We Can... will continue to consult with service
providers, as well as raise awareness through public lectures, panel
presentations, and personal intervention to achieve these goals.
