AB OBJECTIVE: Socio-economic characterization of AIDS patients that live in
support houses, and evaluatin of the importance of these houses to the
Public Health Service. METHODS: An open ended questionnaire with 18
items was applied to 49 patients of 3 support houses in the city of Sao
Paulo. RESULTS: There were 35 male patients and 14 female, 30
interviewees had basic school level. In relation to risk factors, 6 were
homossexuals, 15 sex workers, 16 intravenous drug users, and 12 were
heterossexual. Thirty nine interviewees had no professional
qualification and 37 had no permanent home or family. CONCLUSION: As the
results showed that the majority of patients have no professional
qualificat or family the support house are of great importance as an
alternative social choice in a country in development as Brazil. Without
them these patients would be either overloading health services or
aggravating an already existing social problem by living in the streets.
