AB OBJECTIVE: To set up an HIV/AIDS psychological consultancy in a mental
health municipal institution. The project is based on prevention and
assitance. Prevention: Efforts target community groups and individuals.
HIV awareness and care are promoted, as well as support and integration
of PWA in the social network. Assistance: Psychotherapy is made
available to persons with HIV/AIDS and/or their partners, families and
friends. METHOD: Workshops are oriented to specific groups: school
children, teachers, adolescents, medical students, health care
personnel, drug rehabilitation centers, women's groups and social clubs.
Several topics are focused on: sexuality, health rights, HIV testing and
safer sex. After attending workshops, participants may request
individual counseling. Subject to previous evaluation, psychotherapy is
provided when required, either individually or in groups. RESULTS:
During 1993, 32 workshops were conducted (1 to 4 meetings each) and 54
counseling interviews. One family and six individuals are now receiving
on-going psychotherapeutic assistance. CONCLUSIONS: Group workshops and
personal counseling effectively benefit most people. Psychotherapy away
from hospital environment is a welcome relief for most PWA. The HIV/AIDS
consultancy in a municipal mental health center is important in
providing specialized attention and treatment, at no cost, to the
       general population.
