AB OBJECTIVE: Most relatives and friends of people living with AIDS (PLWA)
ignore how to take care of PLWA, when they are sick at home; for fear
and prjudice still hinder appropriate home care. The volunteers of the
Amigos acompanantes program (buddy system) promote emotional and
practical support for PLWA, using a video designed to sensibilize and
educate relatives and friends. METHOD: To design and produce the video,
a survey and interviews were carried out with volunteer buddies, health
professionals, relatives and friends of PLWA. With the data obteined,
the main needs of practical and emotional support were identified. The
video was designed within the methodological framework of popular
education, which encourages the participation of the community in
actively solving its problems. An expert on educational videos produced
a video which was presented (tested) to focal groups of relatives and
friends, as well as in a national workshop to train volunteers on
emotional and practical support for PLWA. A practical guide for the use
of the video was also designed so that trainers and volunteers could
make the best use of the video based on the popular education
methodology. RESULTS: Once the comments of focal groups were evaluated,
the corrections were made and material reproduced. Presently, the
evaluation of the materials and the impact are being carried out.
