AB OBJECTS: ASA is an NGO for solidarity with people with AIDS (PWA)
founded in 1985 in Milan, Italy, providing the first telephone line for
information about HIV. Later (1987) started the first self-help group
for PWA in Italy, Home care, on the tracks of the American buddies,
started in 1987. describe in this paper our experience (1987-1993) about
home care as health professionals, social workers and simple buddies.
RESULTS: We followed a total of 120 PWA (mainly gay men) aged 33 years.
Time of assistance was mainly between 1-6 mounths for 94 people and
between 6-30 mounths for 26 of them. Our assistance included daily life
support, social workers support (civil rights, disability pensions,
economic help) psychological and health professionals support (medical
examinations, etc.). The home care team comprended 52 volunteers and 13
professionals. Every PWA has been supported by almost two volunteers
and, when needed, by the professionals. COMMENTS: In Italy, during the
last years, the need of home care for PWA has increased because of the
       widening of the HIV epidemics.
