AB OBJECTIVE: To describe the development of a model of counseling and
other services offered to health care workers (HCWs) caring for the HIV
patient. METHODS: A mailed survey was conducted of 541 (HCWs) (80%
response) in Austin, Texas to investigate current stress levels, and
psychological barriers in their work with HIV patients. Data was
collected during the fall of 1992. The model was stratified by
professional disciplines. Based upon needs assessed, a pilot support
group was developed. A team of 2 counselors was recruited to interview
group participants and facilitate support activities. RESULTS: A
flexible and replicable model of mental health support meets the demand
for counseling identified by (HCWs) to counteract the stress, anxiety,
depression and other feelings resultant from HIV patient care. The model
includes: (a) an assessment interview with individuals volunteering for
support group participation; (b) counselors determine psychological and
social needs to match participants with appropriate intervention
strategies; (c) on 12-week cycles, educational and support groups as
well as individual therapy is provided. Maximum group size 8-10
individuals, organized by occupations. CONCLUSIONS: Attendance and
evaluations of participants suggest a high level of commitment and
       involvement in the program.
