 AB ISSUE: PWA have a leading role to play in HIV/AIDS prevention
       strategies. This role has successfully emerged to facilitate campaigns
       of AIDS programme. PROJECT: The model of PWA was recognised and
       instituted in 1987 at TASO. At the initial stages PWA were to share
       personal experiences and fellowship at the day centre. METHOD:
       Reviewing, analysing and observation of TASO programmes; interviews and
       group focus discussions; participation in workshops and conferences.
       RESULTS: Over the years, more PWA have got involved in activities
       related to AIDS work. Their role in influencing behaviour change,
       reducing stigma and counselling within institutions, communities and the
       nation at large has become well recognised. Their role has expanded to
       include: peer education; adhoc AIDS awareness through music and drama;
       facilitating education work; propagating safer sex; contribution to
       programme activities by drawing from their own needs and facilitating
       programme appraisals and Research. CONCLUSION: PWA are a great potential
       in the fight against HIV/AIDS and are a significant factor in the
       process of behaviour change and prevention strategies should
       increasingly involve them. The Role of PWA in influencing Policies,
       interventions and practices cannot be underestimated.
