 AB    OBJECTIVE: AIDS is spreading rapidly in Tamil Nadu. There needs to be a
       concerted effort to fight this pandemic. Though efforts have been made
       by NGOs, lack of technical inputs and access to information especially
       in rural Tamil Nadu the initiative has been limited. Network SMI was
       initiated in 1992 to provide rural NGOs with the necessary technical and
       other support and has 162 member NGOs. METHODS: Organized 40 training
       for NGOs on program development for AIDS Prevention. Orientation and
       training (12 workshops) for private medical practitioners (traditional
       healers) on STD care and treatment all over State through member NGOs.
       Acts as a link between Government agencies, NGOs and other institutions
       to develop atmosphere conducive for AIDS prevention. Forum to share
       experiences so that experiences and lessons in prevention programs can
       be used in similar programs in other parts of the state. Has a
       documentation center that collects and disperses material and
       information to member organizations which ensures standardization of
       messages and easy access to the latest national and international
       developments. RESULTS: The Network has initiated and has been able to
       integrate AIDS Prevention program into existing NGO activities so that
       there is a more intensive front against HIV/AIDS. Has enabled easy
       access to information and technical expertise for rural based NGOs in
       the State and for the first time has initiated prevention activities in
       the rural areas of the State. Has developed a network where experiences
       are shared for a joint effort to combat HIV/AIDS at the State level.
       CONCLUSION: We will share our experience in networking.
