AB OBJECTIVE: To describe patient characteristics and changes in sexual
practices in a broad cross-section of immunosuppressed HIV-infected
       women. METHODS: HIV-infected women in 6 U.S. cities with a CD4 count <
or = 500 were enrolled by their primary care physicians and questioned
on their past and current sexual practices including number of sexual
partners and risk behaviors. RESULTS: Preliminary data are available on
       86 of 126 women enrolled. Forty-seven % were white, 37% were
       African-American and 7% were Latina. Seventy-three % reported
heterosexual sex with a high risk partner as a possible mode of
acquisition; 17% reported heterosexual sex without a known high risk
partner as their only possible means of acquisition. Median age of the
population was 33 years (R, 20-52); median age at first intercourse was
16 years (R, 3-26). Median number of lifetime sexual partners was 10 (R,
1-1000), but only 1 (R, 0-4) during the 6 months prior to entry.
Eighty-nine % of patients practiced abstinence or used condoms at the
time of study entry, compared to 66% previously. Six % continued to have
unprotected sex at the time of study entry. CONCLUSION: This group of
women reported decreases in the number of sexual partners and increased
safe sex behavior over time, but some continue to have unprotected
       intercourse despite HIV infection.
