AB OBJECTIVE: The impact of HIV infection differs dramatically among all
communities affected. In order to understand its impact among women it
is necessary to analyze how they are inserted in the social, economical,
political and medical care levels. According to this, the SOS Women &
AIDS Publications Project from GAPA-SP proposed to BIRD and Brazilian
Ministry of Health the imprint of educational material, both formative
and informative, directed towards women. METHODS: Our purpose is to
create publications with complementary objectives--distinct educational
materials that together may influence the public and the individual
knowledge, attitude and behavior. Therefore, we are printing until May
1994 (1) the second edition of our folders and booklet on Particular
Aspects of HIV Infection and Disease on Women, and (2) the quarterly
newsletter MAIS, which stands for Women, AIDS, Information and Sexuality
in Portuguese. RESULTS: So far, we can only count on the results from
the first edition of the leaflets and booklet as a well-accepted
formative material, results that encouraged their re-edition. What
concerns the newsletter, the purpose is (1) to publish national and
foreign articles about recent researches on HIV infection and treatment
in women, (2) to promote new initiatives and workshops, and (3) to
facilitate communication among NGOs, GOs and community workers that
focus on women and/or HIV. CONCLUSION: We justify our effort because
AIDS is now the main cause of death among women between 20 and 35 years
old in the State of Sao Paulo (SEADE/1994), and there is a lack of
specific information aimed towards women and HIV through instruments
       idealized and publicized by them.
