AB OBJECTIVES: To estimate levels of condom use and to estimate
associations of knowledge and attitudes with condom use. METHODS: A
cross sectional study have been conducted in the urban area of Santo
Domingo (where 54% of the actually reported AIDS cases comes from). 177
women between 15-49 years old were interviewed spread in 30 clusters
within 29 neighborhoods of the city. The sampling was by cluster defined
by geographic characteristics. Educational material and condoms were
given to the subjects. RESULTS: No women (0.0%) reported that they had
had casual sex (sex with a person with whom they had no stable
relationship) in the past three months, but more than half (56.3%) feel
they are at risk for AIDS, and only 16.3% of these women said they had
used a condom in the last sexual intercourse. The reason for considering
themselves at risk is due to husband or boyfriend's sexual behaviors.
Even recognicing that their partners are usually involved in risky
behaviors, they are not able to ask them for condom use. Our analysis
indicate a good level of information about causes (90.5% of correct
answers), modes of transmission (97% of correct answers) and prevention
(96% of correct answers). Women subordination seems to be strongly
related with condom use. Almost all women (94.2%) said that condoms are
not for use with husbands or boyfriends and that condom use with one's
husband is a mistrut sign. CONCLUSIONS: Basic information about AIDS
doesn't required mayor additional emphasis in women population. Women's
education programs needs to address their enpowerment. In this order,
face to face experiences should be development.
