AB OBJECTIVE: To develop a graphic instrument to encourage among Health
Care Workers (HCW) a team approach to the delivery of care and social
welfare services to People Living With HIV (PWHIV). METHODS: Interviews
were conducted with HCW and PWHIV in Jamaica to ascertain their needs
and recommendations regarding the development of an accessible network
of welfare services appropriate for a low HIV prevalence country. An
algorithm was then developed and tested with the target audience.
RESULTS: A poster was developed based on the algorithm, highlighting the
concerns of people affected by HIV, and serving as a guide to HCW for
referrals to those services needed by PWHIV. The poster will be
distributed to relevant welfare agents. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: In
the development of the HIV/AIDS Welfare Programme in Jamaica it has
become very apparent that, if these services are to be accessible to
PWHIV/AIDS, given the high level of denial and the social stigma of AIDS
in Jamaica, a team approach must be taken to the delivery of these
services. The poster, attractively presented and prominently displayed,
serves as a decision tree and reminder to the often overworked, but
well-intentioned caregiver, of the needs of PWHIV and of other potential
       members of the welfare team.
