AB OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this survey was to obtain data regarding
awareness and knowledge of HIV transmission via semen among physicians
in Mizoram, India. METHODS: A survey questionnaire was distributed among
41 physicians, 24 males and 17 females. The major focus of this
questionnaire was to obtain data on their understanding regarding HIV in
semen. RESULTS: Seventeen percent male and 7% female physicians felt
that HIV is not present in the semen of an infected person. Fifty
percent males and 28% females felt that semen is not the most common
source of HIV infection after sexual intercourse with an infected
individual. The majority of male (69%) and female (86%) physicians felt
that vaginal fluid of an infected person is not a common source of HIV
transmission. Eighty-eight percent males and 75% females felt that HIV
in semen should be a high priority area of research in Mizoram.
According to these physicians, education and research on HIV in semen is
essential in Mizoram. CONCLUSION: Due to geographical location, Mizoram
is in a vulnerable position to have more HIV infected persons.
Therefore, knowledge regarding all aspects of HIV/AIDS among health care
workers is critical in Mizoram. This survey clearly shows that further
knowledge on HIV in semen and its mode of transmission is required.
Therefore, this should be a high priority research and education area in
       Mizoram.
