AB OBJECTIVE: To promote AIDS prevention measurement in Japan, the actual
circumstance of knowledge, attitude and behavior (KAB) among workers at
risk for HIV infection should be clarified. In the present study, we
focused on acupuncture therapists and hairdressers in Aichi Prefecture
and evaluated the level of their KAB. METHODS: By using a
self-administered questionnaire, the KAB condition of 500 acupuncture
therapists and 10,989 hairdressers were surveyed on September-December
       in 1993. Finally 494 (96.8%) and 4,524 (41.2%) were available for
analysis, respectively. RESULTS: They had good knowledge of general
issues on HIV transmission. More than 80% of acupuncture therapists
sterilize their needles by autoclave and 60% of them use disposable
needles, and on the other hand 70-80% of hairdressers use ultraviolet
rays to sterilize their tools. More than a half of them have
participated to the education program of AIDS, and 30-40% responded that
they can accept HIV carriers as a visitor. DISCUSSION: Japanese
acupuncture therapists and hairdressers had enough knowledge, however,
it was recognized that there is a big discrepancy between their
knowledge of HIV transmission routes and a preferable attitude towards
HIV carriers. An appropriate education program to shorten this distance
       is now desired.
