AB OBJECTIVE: The National Federation of Health Insurance Societies is a
public corporation that was established and has been active for the
purpose of supporting health insurance societies that are nationwide
functioning to promote medical care, health and welfare of the insured.
METHODS: In order to train nurses for the persons capable of dealing
with the problem of consultation and education about AIDS/HIV, the
Federation hold AIDS prevention study meetings for nurses who belong to
various health insurance societies, at nine places in eight large cities
of Japan. Each study meeting mainly consists of the three programs,
Actual state of prevention and treatment for AIDS. Points to copes with
AIDS at workplaces and to educate AIDS prevention and Actual
consultation and guidance about AIDS. These programs were conducted by
expert lecturers for five hours in total. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The
total number of attendance at the nine study meetings was 1,789 (nurses:
47.1%, public health nurses: 38.6%, others concerned: 14.3%). Among
them, 513 persons have experience of being asked questions and giving
some advice about AIDS (37% of 1,387 persons who answered this
question). Regarding the details of the questions, those about HIV test
are 194 as the top, the second is 182 questions about the routes of
infection, and the third is 78 general questions such as symptoms and
the incubation period of it. On the other hand, the study plainly showed
the fact that nurses at workplaces are worrying about problems such it
is hard to tackle the prevention campaign and education of AIDS because
of poor understanding of the management, being in constant fear since
they have no concrete preventive measures to HIV carriers, Some
employees do not plan to change their high-risk behavior.
