AB BACKGROUND: Educating a spectrum of primary care providers in the
management of HIV disease is one of the important challenges of the
HIV/AIDS pandemic. While experienced clinicians are often called upon to
teach others, they may have limited access to educational materials to
support their presentations. OBJECTIVE/METHODS: To develop a set of
low-cost, annotated HIV teaching slides to support self-study by primary
care providers and to enhance didactic presentations by experienced
clinicians. RESULTS: Two 80-slide volumes have been produced which
review the natural history, pathogenesis, and spectrum of HIV disease,
and also provide an introduction to the management of HIV disease in the
primary care setting. CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary evaluation indicates that
an annotated slide series is effective in self-study and conference
formats with a wide spectrum of providers, and compares favorably with
textbooks, journal articles and other media as a means of providing
HIV/AIDS education. This medium could be easily adapted for use by
regional or national AIDS agencies to support the dissemination of
clinical information by experienced primary care providers.
