AB ISSUE: HIV seroprevalence is highest among Africans because of the high
prevalence of HIV among refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa AIM: To prevent
HIV transmission. METHOD: Culturally appropriate approach to target
group. LESSONS LEARNED: By providing facts in a non-judgmental format,
we have reduced some fears and myths about HIV/AIDS. Our target group
was able to personalize AIDS issues. Individual fears and anger were
turned into positive action for a fight against the epidemic. Diverse
socio-economical issues had to be dealt with before sex/sexuality and
STD prevention communication could begin. PWAs are an invaluable
resource in AIDS work. Continuous and consistent interaction between the
target group and our organisation is crucial for successful and
       sustainable information and education programme.
