AB OBJECTIVE: Develop an AIDS Prevention initiative with teenagers (age 13
to 20) based on trainned teenagers multipliers and to define better
intervention strategies. METHODS: APTA, an ONG, trainned 45 youths,
divided in two groups: A: age 14 to 20 and B: 12 to 14. The work was
developed in 2 Public schools in the poor periphery of Sao Paulo city.
The groups defined and developed AIDS prevention activities in their
schools. RESULTS: Group A was able to involve their teachers for an AIDS
Prevention trainning during their vacations. One of the group A
participants wrote a theater play and, with the help of some teachers
and APTA staff were able to perform it at their school, other schools
and in a small theater in the area. This group also trainned another
group of tennager from their school Group B got a stable place in their
school where they have almost every wednesday afternoon discussions with
other teenagers. They have developed, among other activities, 4 safe sex
meetings. CONCLUSIONS: The young participants of this project have been
able to get involved in a serious and effective way with this
initiative, and are now references for AIDS related issues in their
schools. Preliminary analysis of their interviews suggest that they have
been involved less with risk activities. A more accurate evaluation of
the efficacy of this work is under way.
