AB OBJECTIVE: To determine the awareness of communities concerning AIDS, to
explore traditional ways of coping with crises and to develop
interventions and appropriate strategies. METHODS: The research was
initiated by the World Council of Churches and carried out by local
organizations in Uganda, Tanzania and Zaire 1991-1993. The method used
was Participatory Action Research (PAR). Phase I: Rapid appraisal with
questionnaires and group discussions. Phase II: In-depth analysis
through focus group discussions and key informant interviews with people
living with AIDS, youth, teachers, traditional healers, local leaders
among others. RESULTS: Awareness of the problem was high, but change of
behaviour minimal. Stimulated by the research, communities decided to
modify customs and traditions identified as risky, e.g. widow
inheritance, twin ceremonies, exploitation of women and excessive
drinking. CONCLUSION: PAR proved to be a very valuable method for
assessing the awareness of communities and for stimulating a process
leading to action. This research should be carried out in other areas.
