AB OBJECTIVE: Anonymous HIV testing performed in 3 pedestrian subways in
the rush hours on the World AIDS Day 1992 was very popular and
successful. For the next World AIDS Day we decided to reach youngsters
at high HIV risk, to offer them free, voluntary and anonymous blood and
saliva HIV-testing. METHODS: A rock concert was organized on the World
AIDS Day 1993. The price of tickets was very cheap, because the rock
bands played for free. The youngsters were invited to the concert by all
kinds of Media. More than 3000 people attended the concert. Saliva
samples were taken by SDS saliva sampling system. Concommitantly to the
voluntary anonymous testing, AIDS quiz was offered to be played, and
education books, leaflets as well as condoms were distributed free of
charge. RESULTS: 199 saliva and 81 blood samples were collected.
Slightly more males than females volunteered for the testing. The blood
and saliva samples were analyzed by the ABBOTT 3rd and 2nd generation
tests, respectively. Only one saliva sample was repeatedly reactive by
ELISA, but it was contaminated by blood, and it could not be confirmed
by Western blot. More than 90% of screened youngsters picked up their
results at the AIDS Councelling Center. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
According to the results of our present screening (in accordance of
other studies) Hungary seems to be a low HIV prevalence area. To attract
the youngsters through their favoured entertainments, seems to be a
promising approach in the fight against AIDS by providing correct
information and possibility of free and anonymous testing.
