AB OBJECTIVE: To obtain data on incidence of HIV infection in the town of
Aizawl of Mizoran State in India. METHODS: Phase 1--October 90-January
91: During this period the center had conducted a limited survey in
Aizawl in collaboration with investigators in Calcutta, India by
collecting blood samples from high risk groups and testing for HIV.
Phase 2--From February 91-December 92: Screening was done on blood
donors from blood banks, civil hospitals, patients from STD clinics and
volunteers. Phase 3--January 93-September 93: A maximum number of high
risk groups came for testing as a result of counseling and efforts of
the Salvation Army. RESULTS: In Phase 1, out of 164 blood samples, 9
tested HIV positive. In Phase 2, out of 3294 blood samples, 15 tested
HIV positive. In Phase 3, out of 3066 blood samples, 7 tested HIV
positive. In Phase 2 and Phase 3 of this study, heterosexual
transmission and infection to healthy volunteers without risky behavior
were recorded. CONCLUSION: From our study it was clear that HIV
infection was not limited to a high risk population. It has become a
community problem since 3 apparently healthy volunteers without any
risky behavior tested positive for HIV. Therefore, extensive
surveillance and public education is needed in Mizoram.
