AB OBJECTIVE: To monitor change in the knowledge of HIV-related preventive
practices, the level of sex with non-regular partners and the use of
condoms among the general population. METHODS: In recognizing the
importance of evaluation optimizing the current preventive programmes, a
core protocol for repeated survey of the general population has been
developed by GPA, together with other tools. The surveys used clustered
probability sample design and face-to-face interviewing with selected
adults. RESULTS: Of field-tests in Ethiopia, Burundi, Tanzania and Sri
Lanka indicate that knowledge of preventive practices varied from 35% to
88%, but the level of misconceptions about 'casual' transmission of HIV
was high. The prevalence of sex with non-regular partners in last year
varied from 10% to 45%. 27% to 65% of respondents reported condom use in
the last sexual intercourse of risk. CONCLUSIONS: Implications of these
results for an understanding of the scope and nature of behavioural
change, and the usefulness of data for National AIDS Programmes will be
       discussed.
