AB OBJECTIVE: To assess the magnitude and trend of HIV infection in Tb pts
and a base line data on seroprevalence. To see the type of lesion and
response to treatment in HIV infected cases. METHODS: Cases--Randomly
selected cases of tuberculosis (Tb) who reported to or diagnosed at
Chest Medicine, M.C.H., irrespective of whether they are sputum +ive
cases or extra-pulmonary ones were placed under the study.
Serology--Each serum was tested by ELISA for HIV--I & II antibody.
Specimens found twice +ive by ELISA were confirmed by Western Blot (WB).
       RESULT: Of 395 Tb pts (354 pulmonary, 41 extra-pulmonary), 4 pts (3
Males & 1 Female) were found to be seropositive (WB+ive) for HIV I. All
had lesions in Chest X-ray, only 1 was sputum +ive and 1 had associated
cervical lymphadenopathy. 2 cases could be followed for outcome for Tb
for 3 months and both showed improvement clinically, radiologically and
bacteriologically till now. CONCLUSION: HIV seropositivity is still low
(1% approximately) among tuberculosis patients in Calcutta. This is
consistent with extremely low seropositivity among general population
and high risk groups as well in this zone.
