AB OBJECTIVE: to assess the impact of HIV/AIDS in TB mortality. METHODS:
Data on all deaths between 1989 and 1992 were obtained from the
Department of Vital Statistics. We analyzed, cases, mortality rate, age,
sex and the incidence of both diseases. RESULTS: We obtained the
following results: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. RESULTS: TB
mortality increased 65% in the studied period. This it's coincident with
an increase in the AIDS reported cases. Highest rates were found in
patients with ages between 15 and 34. CONCLUSIONS: Mortality atributable
to the association of TB and AIDS increased over the study period. The
age group with the highest increas in TB have also the highest HIV
prevalence. This results emphasizes the interaction of these diseases
and shows a need of collaborative work between HIV and TB control
       programs in developing countries.
