AB OBJECTIVES: To study the relationship between cumulative AIDS prevalence
rate, tuberculosis (TB) notification rate and socio-demographic factors
in London Boroughs. METHODS: Cumulative AIDS prevalence data up to March
1993 and TB notifications to the Office of Population Censuses and
Surveys (OPCS) were obtained for each LB for the years 1988-92
inclusive. Small Area Statistics derived from the 1991 national census
were collated for each LB. RESULTS: Cumulative AIDS prevalence rate
       varied across London Boroughs (n = 33) from 4 to 258 per 100,000
population. Average annual TB rates ranged from 0 to 60 per 100,000.
There was poor correlation between AIDS prevalence and TB rate, r = 0.17
(95% CI-0.18 to 0.48); and any census data variables under study except
       single never married men aged 50-55 years, r = 0.91 (95% CI 0.83 to
0.96). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: These findings suggest a lack of
significant association between AIDS and TB in London at present. Eighty
three percent of the variation observed in AIDS prevalence across LBs
could be explained by the proportion of the population who were single
       never married men aged 50-55.
