 AB OBJECTIVE--To describe the relation of the HIV epidemic to the active TB
       population in New York State during the period 1987 through 1992 by
       comparing the population characteristics of hospitalized TB patients
       with HIV (TB/HIV+) to those hospitalized TB patients without HIV
       (TB/HIV-). METHODS--Data was obtained from the Statewide Planning and
       Research Cooperative System. Trend analysis were performed on discharges
       and cases. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to
       describe the characteristics of TB/HIV+ patients among the 1992 TB
       cases. RESULTS--Over the six year period, TB/HIV+ discharges increased
       by 270%, from 1,573 to 5,825 while the TB/HIV- increased, from 20% to
       49% (p < 0.001). In TB/HIV+ cases, the proportion of females and drug
       abusers increased (p < 0.01). No major trends were found for the TB/HIV-
       cases. In 1992, the TB/HIV+ cases among TB cases were none likely to be;
       in the 13-49 age group; drug abusers; male; Medicaid insured; NYC
       residents, hospitalized longer (LOS > 21); and patients who died in
       hospital. DISCUSSION--The New York State hospitalized TB population
       characteristics now appears more like those of the TB/HIV+ population.
       HIV testing is recommended for the hospitalized TB populations and TB
       services should be an integral part of HIV care.
