AB INTRODUCTION: Estimates of Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL) is an
indicator commonly used by researchers to measure the magnitude and
socioeconomic impact due to population loss, specially among young
people. PROBLEM: 85% of AIDS cases occurred among persons 20-49 years of
age; this means a population that economically active and in a
reproductive age. During the last years, HIV infection among women
increased by sexual transmission, then an increment of vertical
transmission may be expected. METHODOLOGY: YPLL trends due to AIDS have
been studied and compared with those due to the leading deaths causes in
Chile: cardiovascular diseases, malignant neoplasms and accidents.
Deaths reports and mortality data from 5 years: 1984-1986-1988-1990 and
1991, were considered. Data was analyzed year by year; groups of ages
were standardized for all deaths causes and YPLL were estimated (helped
by a computational program) with the following formula: TABULAR DATA,
SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. RESULTS: Through the rates for the three leading
death causes are higher in comparison to AIDS, they tend to have no
change through the years or show an increment lower than 10%. YPLL are
also higher to those due to AIDS. But if we compare the first and the
last year considered in the study (1984 and 1991) YPLL increment is low
and minimal for cardiovascular diseases, malignant neoplasms and
accidents (6.9%, 29% and 6.2%), YPLL due to AIDS shows an important
increment through the years, that is 88 in 1984 and 3,186 in 1991.
CONCLUSIONS: AIDS Social economical impact may be in the mediate futur
higher than those as a result of other death causes. YPLL trends trace
the necessity of further sistematic studies through the time and could
became a more helpful indicator in public health.
