AB OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of the HIV-related informations at
a commertial laboratory in view of HIV epidemiology. METHODS: Number of
anti-HIV tests, number of anti-HIV positive cases by screening test(EIA)
and/or confirmatory diagnosis (Western blot, WB) during '88-'93 were
surveyed at a commertial laboratory located in the northern Tokyo
metropolitan area. RESULTS: Order for EIA test has started to increase
in the latter half of '91 and continued so thereafter. Number of
anti-HIV positive cases by EIA jumped from '90 to '91 particularly in
female*, further increased in '92 however dropped in '93. Proportion of
EIA-positive cases, remained below 0.10% during '88-'90, increased to
around 0.50% in '92 then decreased to 0.24% in '93. It was revealed that
orders for WB among screening test positive cases declined gradually
from 74% in '90 to 40% in '93. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Well corresponding to the recent findings in
the HIV/AIDS Surveillance of Japan, commertial lab-based data appeared
useful to reinforce the observation by the Surveillance. Comparison of
the data between multiple laboratories would be useful in view of
       regional epidemiology of HIV.
