AB AIDS has been an important public health problem in Brazil. The country
nowadays ranks a 4th among the whole world. The most recent figures show
45,049 AIDS cases in Brazil from 1980 to 1993, being that 26,143 out of
those come from the State of Sao Paulo and 15,455 (34.3%) come only from
the City of Sao Paulo. The Surveillance System is active and collects
information from hospital patients and from death certificates. This
system uses the CDC AIDS case definition. The reported information on
AIDS cases are related to the following variables: risk behavior group,
age, sex, time of the first symptoms, presence of cancer and/or
opportunistic infections. However, this system does not consider the
description of the disease process. Therefore, a study on AIDS natural
history in the City of Sao Paulo is needed in order to help the earlier
diagnosis, to improve the clinical attitudes and also to obtain basic
information for the prevention programs for specific groups.
METHODS--Clinical data from a cohort of patients registered in the AIDS
Reference and Training Centre of the Secretariat of Health of the State
of Sao Paulo from 1982 to 1992 will be reviewed. Information on sex,
age, risk behavior and clinical evolution including the presence of
cancer and opportunistic disease will be collected. The data will be
analysed using the COX REGRESSION and KAPLAN MEYER methods so that the
AIDS natural history can be described.
