AB OBJECTIVE: To focus the importance of drawing to make easier the
expression of tensional aspects among Pediatric AIDS Patients. METHODS:
Since 1992 all the Pediatric AIDS patients hospitalized at the 3rd
inpatients Unit of Instituto de Infectologia Emillo Ribas (n = 86) are
also followed by the Psychologist as a member of the health team. One of
the techniques used by the psychologist consists in a brief conversation
when the children are stimulated to draw whatever they want. They can
use blank sheets of paper and black and/or color pencils, always in
individual sessions. The drawings are studied and then discussed with
the children. RESULTS: The technique of drawing answered the purpose of
a catalyst way to the expression of the tensional aspects related to the
illness and hospitalization processes. The children could then express
feelings like fear, anguish, anxiety, anger, etc. in an easily way. We
could then notice the latent content of their feelings which could not
be expressed by their language or speech. CONCLUSIONS: The technique of
drawing is a very good way to facilitate the expression of the feelings
of pediatric AIDS patients. The transcription of their feelings can
decrease the level of anguish and make the illness, the hospitalization
and maybe their lives less painful.
