AB OBJECTIVE: Establish the profile of the women who come to ATC to test
for HIV antibodies and whose results proved positive. METHODS: 260
promptuaries of women who came for voluntary and anonymous tests to the
ATC between April 15th 1992 and December 30th 1993 and proved positive
were checked. Variables such as age, educational level, marital status,
motivation for coming to the ATC ad symptoms or signs of
immunodeficiency were chosen. RESULTS: Women HIV positive represent
11.38% of all these who came to the ATC. 47.69% are between 25 and 35
years old. 26.15% are of elementary school level or totally illiterate.
23.46% went to junior high school and 16.53% got up to senior high
school. 29.23% of the women are married, 51.92% single and 13.84% are
widows of men who died of AIDS. The main motivation for finding out the
serological status is having had a man as sexual partner who proved HIV
positive (57.30%) and 67.69% believed that sexual intercourse was the
most probable means of contamination. Concerning the clinical status
60.38% didn't show any symptoms of immunodeficiency related to the HIV
when tested. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The heterosexual transmission of
HIV between women with AIDS in counts 55.43% of all the female cases
between 1991-1993. The present data suggest that the AIDS-prevention
aiming the female population should put changes in their sexual behavior
in the first place considering the fact that a significant number of
these women had only one sexual partner and who supposedly should be
excluded from contamination risk and who become a group whose difficulty
in understanding the use of condoms is a challenge for ATC'S team.
