AB OBJECTIVE: To analyse the magnitude and trends of perinatal transmission
and correlate it with trends of AIDS cases among women. METHODS: AIDS
National Registry was analysed. RESULTS: Up to Jan 1994 17,387 total
AIDS cases have been notified. Women are 14.8% (2,570). Transmission
categories (tc) among women are: Heterosexual 41.6%, Recipients of
transfusions 34.5%, IVDU 0.5% expaid blood donors 1.76%, unknown 21.5%.
Pediatric cases are 3.0% (524). Tc among children are: perinatal 46.7%,
recipients of transfusions 21.7%, hemophiliacs 14.9%, sexual abuse 1.7%,
unknown 14.9%. Trends are: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
CONCLUSIONS: Increase in perinatal cases reflects increase in cases
among women which in the past were mostly due to transfusions and
presently are heterosexual transmitted. Timely diagnosis and control
measures are urgently needed among women especially those in risk of
heterosexual transmission (stable partners of bisexual men or IVDU).
