AB OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of HIV, HCV and HBV Infection in
drug addicts who attend Drug Addict Dependent Treatment Center. METHODS:
Sixty one male intravenous drug users (IVDU) and 39 opium/heroin addict
(non-IVDU) were studied for HBsAg, Anti-HCV and Anti-HIV antibodies
using ELISA commercial kit. RESULTS: Our finding demonstrated that
96.72% of IVDU were positive for anti-HCV, while 45.50% were positive
for anti-HIV and 19.67% were positive for HBsAg. In non-IVDU group
       23.08%, 15.35%, 7.69% showed positive Anti-HCV, Anti-HIV and HBsAg
respectively. The co-infection of HCV and HIV was 57.97% and the mutual
presence of HBsAg and Anti-HCV was 11.91%. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: We
found HCV infection to be common among drug users especially in
intravenous drug users. The presence of Anti-HIV, Anti-HCV and HBsAg
were significantly higher in IVDU than non-IVDU.
