AB OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of HIV, HBV, HCV and HDV
infections, and their correlations, between Italian Northern and
Southern i.v.d.a. METHODS: We followed, from June 1985 to December 1993,
3810 i.v.d.a. enrolled in six SER.T. (Public Sanitary Structures for
i.v.d.a.) in Lombardy, Northern Italy, and 1294 followed by the Division
of Infections Diseases of Foggia, Puglia, Southern Italy. RESULTS AND
DISCUSSION: HIVAb was present in 44% of Northern and in 42% of Southern
i.v.d.a., HBSAg in 5.5% of Lombardy and in 9.5 Puglia patients, HDVAb in
53% of Southern and 5% of Northern HBsAg+ i.v.d.a., HCVAb in 55% of
Northern and 75% of Southern patients. We demonstrated that HIV
prevalence in similar, today, in all Italian Countries; HCV do not
recently introduced into the population and HDV prevalence is higher in
       Southern than in Northern Italy.
