AB OBJECTIVES: To examine risk factors for HIV-1 transmission among 64
women seen in a HIV Clinic in Bogota. METHODS: The odds ratios (OR) of
HIV-1 infection associated with self reports of sexual transmission were
estimated using Mantel-Haenszel techniques. RESULTS: 6/64 (6.25%) women
were HIV positive by ELISA; 57% were married or had a stable sex
partner; mean age and age at onset of sexual activity were 27 and 17
years, respectively; mean number of sex partner during the past 12
months was 2, but 25% had 10 or more partners. Univariate OR associated
with HIV-1 infection were: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. DISCUSSION
AND CONCLUSIONS: In these women, HIV-1 transmission was positively
associated with markers of heterosexual activity and negatively
associated with use of condoms. These preliminary results are consistent
with previous work and with an observed new heterosexual trend in
Colombia suggesting that HIV is spreading to significant groups of women
through sexual activity with bisexual men.
