 AB OBJECTIVES: To assess the reliability of sexual behavior information
       based on personal interviews. METHODS: Male index cases (IC) and their
       female partners (FP), recruited from AIDS centers in Rio de Janeiro,
       Brazil, were interviewed for risk factors. Structured questionnaires
       were tested and interviewers were trained following standard manuals of
       instructions. They were blind with regard to the FPs HIV serostatus.
       Male and female interviews were carried out in different rooms, by
       separate interviewers and in the same day. Analysis included: percent
       agreement and Kappa coeficient for comparing male vs female answers
       among couples recruited thru Dec. 1993. Reliability of other male vs
       female comparisons (e.g. income, duration of relationship, frequency of
       contacts) and results of reinterview of FPs will be presented. TABULAR
       DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Reliability was satisfactory
       for all sexual practices, specially vaginal and anal sex; 2.
       Person-to-person interviews, within a Brazilian cultural setting, are
       adequate for obtaining reliable sexual histories among partner studies;
       4. Nevertheless, testing of questionnaires and training of personnel
       should always be conducted when interviews are used for assessing sexual
       behavior.
