AB OBJECTIVES: To study prevalence of HIV-1&2 among pregnant women, to
develop intervention strategies among them and their sexual partners and
to develop cohort for perinatal transmission study. METHOD: Between Jan.
93 and Jan. 94 consecutive women attending prenatal clinic at NGO run
Wadia Hospital in Bombay were recruited on the basis of informed consent
obtained during group sessions of pre-test counseling. Blood specimens
were tested for HIV-1&2 using two different ELISA tests. The
seropositive women were provided post-test counseling and were
encouraged to bring their sexual partners. Cord blood specimens were
collected at delivery of seropositive women. Contraception advised.
       RESULTS: Of the 13,335 women recruited & tested, 91 (0.7%) were HIV-1&2
reactive. The mean age was 23 years. Most were graded middle-class based
on the level of education, family income and with no specific high risk
behaviours. The demographic profile of seroreactive was identical to
that of total sample. Of 91 women, 57 followed up, 51 brought their
partners, of them all but one were reactive. Only 5 women were in first
trimester & none accepted option of termination. The VDRL was reactive
in 98/9129 (1.1%). Only 4/91 (4.4%) were dually infected with HIV and
syphilis. Except two who opted for tubectomy, other women accepted
barrier methods of contraception. CONCLUSION: There is no specific
profile for HIV infection among pregnant women. Increasing prevalence of
HIV warrants pre-natal screening in India.
