AB OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this to find the magnitude of the
spread of this disease, how to create awareness, education and
prevention. METHODS: Interviewed HIV infected patients, STD clinic
physicians, news media, government officials, college students,
religious leaders, entertainment celebrities and the general public.
RESULTS: In India the estimation of HIV infected people are
approximately 3 million and it is growing very rapidly due to the lack
of awareness, education and preventive methods. Majority of the
infections are due to the promiscuous heterosexual behavior, drug
addicts sharing contaminated needles and the third major reason is using
contaminated blood for blood transfusion. CONCLUSION: Country like India
being one of the most populous country in the world, will have more HIV
infections if not controlled by education and prevention. Based on the
current estimation there are about 100,000 prostitutes in Bombay alone
and more than 40% of those are infected with HIV. Average they make six
contacts per day will extrapolate to 240,000 new HIV infections per day.
If this trend continues India will have more HIV infections in the world
within few years. Socio-economic conditions is one of the main aspect
for this old job to flourish. Government should take major interest in
preventive actions and regulate all the blood bank to avoid using any
contaminated blood. Change curriculum to add HIV/AIDS educational
information from the 8th Grade. Religious leaders, Community
Organization and entertainment celebrities should get involved jointly
       to create awareness.
