AB OBJECTION: The study was to track the pattern and trend of human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
(AIDS) in Taiwan. METHOD: In addition to passive surveillance for HIV
positivities and AIDS cases, an active sentinel surveillance from major
medical centers has been set up since 1985. All blood donations and
patients in sexual transmitted disease clinics have been routinely
screened for HIV antibody since 1988. The population-based surveys have
been conducted annually among military recruits and all prison inmates
since 1989. RESULTS: Up to the end of Feb. 1994, 579 HIV infected cases,
including 101 full blown AIDS patients, had been identified. In total,
38% were homosexuals/bisexuals, and 8.5% hemophiliacs. Intravenous drug
users accounted for 6% and 34% were through heterosexual transmissions.
Of them, 72% were aged 20 to 39 years. The ratio of male and female was
14:1. The risk factor attributed to heterosexual transmission increased
from 27% in 1992 to 38% in 1994. CONCLUSION: In Taiwan, the number of
identified HIV/AIDS cases is increasing. Especially heterosexual
transmission show more prominent. The program of AIDS control in this
       area should focus on them.
