AB OBJECTIVES: To estimate HIV seroprevalence among individuals with
possible high risk behavior who visited regional health center in Japan
for HIV antibody testing. METHODS: This study was done in collaboration
with fifteen municipal institutes of health covering each regional
health center situated in different prefectures in Japan. Since 1986,
HIV antibody tests of individuals with possible high risk behavior were
performed at the municipal institute of health by EIA or PA and
confirmed by Western Blot. RESULTS: Since 1986 to date, 252,799 were
tested for HIV antibody and 127(0.05%) were seropositive. HIV prevalence
increased from 0.02% (1987) to 0.05% (1993), and it was especially high
       in Tokyo and Kanagawa areas.
