AB OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the magnitude of HIV infection in selected
rural areas. 2. To get baseline information regarding HIV prevalence
which will help in monitoring future trends. METHODS: A total of six
rural settings were selected for the survey. The sera were collected
from residents in the age group 15-49 years using random sampling
method. Moreover, basic information (demographic data, socio-economic
information, knowledge about HIV/AIDS/STDs etc) were collected using
structured questionnaires. Blood samples were collected for 2415 adults
and ELISA tests were used to screen the specimen for HIV. The total
adults in these villages are estimated to be over 20,000. RESULTS: There
were 43 adults out of 2415 who were positive for HIV and this makes the
HIV sero-positivity result 1.78%. The knowledge about HIV was very much
limited. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: This study has clearly shown that
HIV infection is gradually spreading from the urban to the rural areas
of the country. However, since the magnitude of the problem is still
very small, early intervention activities can save many lives.
