AB OBJECTIVE: To study the way of HIV transmission among infected people in
our city. MATERIAL: Since 1990 up to 1993, we were able to know the way
of infection in 451 out of 1478 HIV positive people by spontaneous
presentation to our service. 167 (37%) were female and 284 (63%) male.
Only IVDU and heterosexual infected people was considered in these
study. Elisa test for HIV from Organon Teknika and Abbott Laboratory
kits was used. Confirmatory test from Organon Teknika (Western Blot and
LiaTek) was performed. RESULTS: 130 (78%) female were infected by
heterosexual sex whereas 37(22%) acquired the infection by parenteral
drugs use. Only 99(35%) men were infected by heterosexual sex, but 185
(65%) male were infected by parenteral drugs use. Figure I and II show
the linear regression when the way of infection was compared among male
versus female. CONCLUSIONS: 1) During these four years the heterosexual
way of infection have increase dramatically among female in the group
studied. 2) Among female is the more important way of infection. 3)
Among male the parenteral use of drugs is more important than in female.
       4) More extensive follow up are necessary to know the speed of HIV
spread in the area of surveillance. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
