 AB OBJECTIVE: To describe the distribution by sex, age and risk factors of
       HIV infected people, as well as trends in two risk groups from the
       Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina (population 13.2 million). METHODS:
       HIV-1 infection was diagnosed according to the algorithm: peripheral lab
       EIA or PA--Reference Center for AIDS EIA or PA EIA2-IFA-Wb-LIA. EIA
       (Abbott, O. Teknika) and WB (Sorin, O. Teknika). RESULTS: From Jan 1989
       to Apr 1993, 3002 HIV+ individuals elder than 13 were diagnosed.
       Distribution of risk groups was: 1702 (56.7%) injection drug users IDU;
       694 (23.1%) heterosexual way HET; 249 (8.3%) homosexual contacts HO; 127
       (4.2%) receptors of blood or blood products; 282 (9.4%) other factors
       including unknown ones. Mean age was: IDU 23.8, HET 26.7, HO 30.4.
       Female proportion was 29.9%. From 1989 to 1993 HIV+ IDU proportion
       decreased (1989 = 70%, 1990 = 66.3%, 1991 = 56.8%, 1992 = 48%, 1993 =
       39.4%), while HIV+ HET increased (1989 = 11.8%, 1990 = 18.9%, 1991 =
       26.5%, 1992 = 29.8%, 1993 = 30.7%). Rates from Metropolitan Area were
       similar than that observed for touristic Atlantic coast, and 10 times
       greater than rural zones rates. CONCLUSIONS: 1) the greatest HIV+ risk
       group in the Province is IDU; 2) HIV+ HET is an increasing group due to
       unprotected sex; 3) It shows how HIV is spreading and ramifying through
       our society.
