AB OBJECTIVE--To compare the demographic characteristics and the way of
acquisition of HIV infection between 100 historical controls (HCs) and
1462 HIV-infected patients prospectively evaluated between 1988 and
1993. METHODS--We compared the demographic patterns of age, sex and way
of acquisition of HIV infection of 1462 patients who had their
serological diagnosis made at our laboratory between 1988 and 1993 with
the first 100 patients reported at our institution, between 1983 and
1985 (HCs). RESULTS--The following graph s summarize data on sex (A) and
way of acquisition of HIV infection (B): TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT
VOLUME. DISCUSSION--Our data suggest a statistically significant
increase in the proportion of women contaminated and shift from a
predominant homosexual/bisexual pattern of transmission to an
increasingly more common heterosexual transmission, especially
       male-to-female.
