AB METHODS: The annual number of registered AIDS cases and AIDS incidence
rates were selected from official reports, analyzed and plotted in a map
of Brazil using geoprocessing techniques. This data were cross-compared
with Brazilian demographical data. RESULTS: Main results are shown in
the map. The gravitational centers (GC) for the general Brazilian
population (1980 & 1991 census) are displayed with, and those for AIDS
cases (1987-1992) with +. DISCUSSION: Despite the significant spread of
the AIDS epidemic to all states of the country (maps not shown in this
abstract form), the early diffusion of AIDS and the continuously high
incidence rates in the States of Sao Paulo & Rio (the wealthiest of the
country), pulled the AIDS' GCs south (comparing with the general pop.
GCs). However we can observe that the annual AIDS GC is moving itself
west. CONCLUSION: A presumptive explanation for this displacement,
different from the general pop. GC, is the preferential spread of the
epidemics toward middle-sized cities of S. Paulo State, and states of
       the south and center-west regions.
