AB OBJECTIVES: To describe the AIDS epidemic in two close neighbours
states; California in USA and Baja California in Mexico. METHODS: AIDS
cases surveillance information was used to compare the distribution of
cases. For California we used information for August 1993 and for Mexico
until December 1993. RESULTS: To December 1993 USA had 339,250 AIDS
cases with a rate of 1,343 per million, Mexico had 17,387 with a rate of
200 per million California had 18.5% of all USA cases an Baja California
had 3 % of Mexicans cases. 16% of AIDS cases in California are Hispanic
and 4% were born in Mexico. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
CONCLUSIONS: Southern California and Baja California have very close
socioeconomical ties. This situation is reflected in the AIDS epidemic.
It is important to pay attention to IVDU a growing risk in this part of
Mexico. The most important differences between the cities were
heterosexual and transfusion that its higher in Tijuana. In women the
       different was in transfusion.
